Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ط-ل-ق (ṭ-l-q), which carries the core idea of loosing, releasing, or setting free. طليق follows the فعيل (fa'īl) pattern, a common shape for adjectives describing a lasting state, here the state of being released or unbound. The same root gives طلاق, the legal release of a marriage bond, and أطلق, to release or to fire a shot. Arabic is a Semitic language, so no Proto-Indo-European root applies here.
