Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ṣ-w-r, which carries the sense of form, shape, or image. Classical Arabic built the noun ṣūra, meaning picture or form, from the same root. Form V of the verb, taṣawwara, adds a reflexive prefix to the doubled root, giving the sense of making an image for oneself, hence to imagine or conceive of something mentally.
