Etymology
مُضادّ is the active participle of the Form III verb ضادّ (to oppose, to act against), built on the root ض-د-د, which carries the core sense of opposition or contrariness. The same root gives ضد (didd), the ordinary word for "opposite" or "counterpart". Because Form III often expresses one party acting toward or against another, مُضادّ came to mean "that which counters or opposes" something else. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no PIE root.
