Etymology
تعذيب is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of the Form II verb عذّب (ʿaddhaba), meaning to torture or torment, built on the triliteral root ع-ذ-ب. The same root gives عذاب (ʿadhāb), torment or punishment, a word that recurs often in the Quran for divine punishment. Since Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root behind it.
