Etymology
The noun comes from the triliteral Semitic root h-w-n, whose core sense is lightness in weight or worth. Classical Arabic split this root into two nouns by vowel pattern alone: hawn (fatha) for gentleness and calm, and hūn (damma) for the negative side of the same idea, being of little worth, hence disgrace. The Quran uses al-hūn several times to describe the punishment of the arrogant, which fixed the word's formal, elevated register.
