Etymology
The word traces back to the Arabic root ح-س-س (ḥ-s-s), meaning to feel or perceive. From this root came ḥassās, an intensive adjective meaning sensitive, and ḥassāsiyya, the abstract noun for sensitivity or allergy. Adding the nisba ending -iyy to that base produced ḥassāsiyy, a noun for a person marked by that trait, an allergic or highly sensitive individual.
