Etymology
مُسافِر is the active participle of the Form III verb سافَرَ, "to travel," built on the triliteral root س ف ر. The root's core sense in Arabic is "to uncover or reveal," as in the phrase for dawn breaking. Travel likely took this sense because a journey uncovers new land or removes a veil from the traveler's face. The English word "safari" entered through Swahili from this same Arabic root, by way of the noun سَفَر, "journey."
