Etymology

مُلائِم comes from the Arabic root ل-أ-م, whose base verb لأم means to join, mend, or close up, as in sealing a wound. The Form III verb لاءم extended this idea to abstract fitting: bringing two things into agreement so they match. مُلائِم is the active participle of that verb, so it literally describes something that fits or agrees with a given need.
