Etymology
The word traces to the Arabic root ج-م-ع (j-m-ʕ), meaning to gather or collect. From this root comes the noun جَماعَة (jamāʕa), meaning group or community. Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ, which turns nouns into 'relating to' adjectives, produces جَماعِيّ: something that belongs to or characterizes the group. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
