Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ḍ-y-f, the same root behind ضيف (guest) and ضيافة (hospitality). Classical usage first meant to give someone lodging, to receive them as a guest. From there the sense widened to joining or annexing one thing to another, much as a host brings a guest into the household. This is why the noun إضافة also names the Arabic grammatical construction where one noun is annexed to another.
