Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ف-ج-أ (f-j-ʾ), whose verb fajiʾa/fajaʾa means to happen to someone unexpectedly or to catch someone unawares. فجأة is the verbal noun of this root, meaning suddenness or surprise. Adding the accusative indefinite ending turns the noun into an adverb of manner, so فَجْأَةً literally functions as in a sudden manner, used in everyday speech to mean suddenly.
