Etymology
مِلْك comes from the Semitic root m-l-k, which carries the linked ideas of owning, possessing, and ruling. The same root produces Arabic مَلِك (king) and مُلْك (kingdom, sovereignty), so ownership and rule share one linguistic source. Cognate forms of this root appear across other Semitic languages, where kingship is likewise framed as a form of possession. مِلْك itself narrows the root to concrete ownership: a thing one holds a legal right to.
