Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root ع-د-و, tied to the verb عدا, meaning to run or to pass over something. Pre-Islamic Arabs used عدوى for the idea that disease passes from one body to another, much as an aggressor crosses into another's territory. The same root gives عدو (enemy) and عدوان (aggression), both built on the sense of crossing a boundary. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
