Waqiḥ comes from the Semitic root w-q-ḥ, which carries the sense of hardness or brazenness applied to a person's face or manner. Classical Arabic dictionaries derive it from the verb waquḥa, to become hardened in one's shamelessness, and pair it with the abstract noun waqāḥa for the trait itself.
