Etymology

فائِق is the active participle of the hollow verb فاقَ (to surpass, to rise above). Both trace to the Semitic root ف و ق, whose core sense is 'above, over, exceeding.' In the فاعِل participle pattern, the middle radical و surfaces as a hamza after the long ā, giving فائِق rather than a form with a visible waw. The same root gives فوق, the ordinary word for 'above.'
