Etymology

تابِع comes from the Arabic triliteral root ت-ب-ع (t-b-ʕ), whose core verb تَبِعَ means "to follow, come after, pursue." تابِع is the active-participle form of this verb, built on the common فاعِل pattern used to mean "the one doing the action." Arabic is a Semitic language, so this word has no Indo-European root; its relatives lie instead in other Semitic languages.
