Etymology
مُصادَفة is the verbal noun of the Form III verb صادَفَ, meaning to happen upon or coincide with something. The same triliteral root ص-د-ف also gives صَدَفَة, the word for a seashell. Some Arabic dictionaries link the two senses through the image of two things fitting or falling together, much as a shell's two halves close on each other.
