Etymology
Arabic borrowed إمبراطور from Ottoman Turkish imparator, which in turn came from Latin imperator, a title first used for victorious Roman generals and later for the head of the Roman state. The Arabic form entered common use as Arabic writers described Byzantine, European, and later Japanese or Chinese rulers who did not fit native titles like ملك or سلطان. Its stem does not follow a native Arabic triliteral root, marking it clearly as a loanword.
