Etymology

تقليد is the verbal noun of the Form II verb قلّد, built on the triliteral root ق ل د, whose core sense is 'collar' or 'neck-ring'. The verb first meant 'to place a collar or chain around someone's neck', a gesture used to formally invest a person with an office. From there the meaning widened to 'to follow someone's example as if bound to them', and finally settled into the modern sense of 'imitation' or 'copying'. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
