Etymology
تَهْدِيد is the verbal noun of the form II verb هَدَّدَ, 'to threaten.' Both come from the triliteral root ه-د-د, whose base sense is tearing down or demolishing. A threat, in this logic, is the promise to bring something down on someone. The taf'īl pattern (تَفْعيل) is the regular way Arabic builds the noun of action for this verb class.
