Etymology
جائِزة comes from the root ج-و-ز, which means to pass or cross. It is the feminine active participle of جائِز, 'passing, permissible.' In early usage a جائِزة was a gift handed to a traveler passing through or to a guest. The sense later narrowed to a reward or prize given for merit or victory.
