Etymology
كَنَّة is the Arabic word for a son's wife. Arabic dictionaries list it under the root k-n-n, which carries the sense of covering and shelter, the household into which the bride is received. Comparative Semitic scholarship instead links it to an older word for bride, Proto-Semitic *kallat-, the source of Hebrew kallāh and Akkadian kallatu. The two accounts are not fully settled.
