Etymology
جائِع comes from the triliteral Arabic root ج و ع, which carries the idea of hunger. It is the active participle of the verb جاع, to be or become hungry, so it names the one who is in that state. The same root gives جوع, hunger, and مجاعة, famine. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
