Etymology

إعطاء is the verbal noun of أعطى, the Form IV verb meaning to give. It is built on the triliteral root ع-ط-و, which carries the sense of handing over or granting. The final weak radical surfaces as a hamza, yielding the إِفْعال pattern. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
