Etymology

تَعاطَى is a Form VI verb (تَفاعَلَ pattern) built on the triliteral root ع-ط-و, which underlies عَطَا and أَعْطَى, meaning to give or hand over. Form VI often marks mutual or reciprocal action, so the base sense was close to giving something to one another or taking something up between two parties. Over time the meaning widened from exchange to simply taking up, handling, or consuming something, which is why modern Arabic uses it for taking drugs and for dealing with an issue.
