إيقاع is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أوقع, built on the triliteral root و ق ع, whose basic sense is to fall or to happen. Form IV adds a causative meaning, to make something fall or make something occur, which gives senses like to inflict a blow or a penalty. The musical sense of rhythm grew from this idea of a beat that falls again and again at set intervals. The word is native Arabic, not a borrowing.
