Etymology

Mal'ak is the classical Arabic word for angel. Arab lexicographers trace it to the verb alaka, to send with a message, so the word literally names one who is sent. The same Semitic root gives Hebrew mal'akh and Aramaic mal'akha, both meaning messenger or angel. In everyday modern Arabic the shorter form malak or malak is far more common than this older hamza spelling, which now mostly appears in classical texts and dictionaries.
