Etymology

أحدث is the elative form of the adjective حديث, meaning new or recent. Arabic builds elatives on the pattern أفعل, so the prefix أ- attaches to the root ح-د-ث, which carries the sense of happening or coming into being. The same root gives Arabic its word for event and for the Hadith, the recorded sayings of the Prophet. Because the root is Semitic, it has no Indo-European ancestor.
