Etymology
The root ل غ م in Classical Arabic carried the sense of plugging, stopping up, or inserting something into a hole or crevice. Modern Arabic extended this old root to name the buried explosive device, since a mine is inserted and hidden in the ground much like the classical sense of stopping up a gap. The word entered its current military meaning in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as Arabic adapted vocabulary for new weapons technology.
