Etymology
نَوْعِيّ comes from the noun نوع (naw', meaning kind, type, or species), built on the root ن-و-ع. Arabic forms relational adjectives by adding the nisba suffix يّ to a noun, so نوع plus يّ yields نوعي, literally of a kind or type. In modern usage it settled into the standard term for qualitative, mainly to contrast with كمّي, quantitative.
