Etymology

مضطرب is the active participle of the Form VIII verb اضطرب, built on the triliteral root ض ر ب, which carries the basic sense of striking or hitting. Form VIII normally inserts a ت after the first root letter, but that ت assimilates to the emphatic ط when it follows an emphatic consonant like ض, a regular sound rule in Arabic. Over time the verb shifted from a physical sense to an abstract one, so instead of meaning to be struck, it came to mean to be shaken or thrown into turmoil.
