جانِحinclining, leaning
جَوانِحribs, sides of the chest
Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ج-ن-ح (j-n-ḥ), which carries the sense of inclining or leaning to one side. A wing is the limb a bird tilts to bank and turn, so the link to bending is direct. The same root yields جَنَحَ, to lean or incline, and جَوانِح, the ribs or sides of the chest.
