Etymology

حَسَب comes from the Semitic root ح-س-ب (ḥ-s-b), meaning to count or reckon. The noun first named the measure or amount of a thing, then marked proportion, which gives the common prepositional use 'according to' or 'by the measure of.' A second sense, noble descent, grew from the honors counted to a person's credit and survives in the set phrase الحَسَب والنَّسَب. The same root yields ḥisāb, account, and the modern ḥāsūb, computer.
