Etymology
حَمّام comes from the Arabic root ح-م-م, which carries the sense of heat and hot water. The faʿʿāl pattern turns it into a noun for the place where one bathes in warm water. Arabic passed the word to Turkish as hamam and to Persian, and from there it entered several European languages. The bathing institution itself drew on earlier Roman and Byzantine practice.
