Etymology
The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root ح-ز-م (ḥ-z-m), which carries the sense of binding, tying, and firmness. The same root gives the verb ḥazama, to tie up or bundle, and the noun ḥuzma, a bundle or sheaf. A ḥizām is the thing that binds the waist.
