Etymology
The word is a nisba, an Arabic relative adjective, built from أَمْرِيكا (Amrīkā), the borrowed name of America, plus the suffix ـِيّ (-iyy). America itself is named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, whose Latinized first name was Americus. Arabic took the place name and attached its own gentilic ending to mean 'belonging to America'.
