Etymology
مُدِير is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَدَارَ, meaning to make go round, to run, or to administer. It comes from the triliteral root د-و-ر, which carries the sense of turning, revolving, and circling. A manager is therefore the one who keeps things running. The root is hollow, so the medial و surfaces as the long vowel ī, giving مُدِير rather than the expected مُدْوِر.
