Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ح-ل-ق (ḥ-l-q), which carries the idea of roundness and encircling. The same root yields the verb for shaving (going around the head) and the noun for the throat. The modern sense of an episode grew from the image of a link in a chain, since a series is a chain (سِلْسِلَة) and each part is one link.
