Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root خ-س-ر (kh-s-r), which carries the sense of loss and decrease. It is common in Classical Arabic and frequent in the Quran, where the noun الخاسرون names those who lose. The same root survives across the Semitic family with the related meaning of lacking or falling short.
