Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root kh-s-m, which carries the sense of disputing, contending, or cutting a claim down. From this root Arabic built both a person noun, khasm, the one you contend against, and a commercial sense, deduction or discount, since a discount is a claim cut down from the full price. The two senses split from one shared idea of reducing or opposing a claim.
