Etymology

Watar comes from the Semitic root w-t-r, whose core sense is a single taut cord and, by extension, oddness or singularity. The same root gives witr, the term for an odd number and for the odd-numbered closing prayer in Islamic ritual. From the image of a single stretched string, Arabic extended the word to the bowstring, the musical string, the anatomical tendon, and later the geometric chord and hypotenuse.
