Etymology
خِدْمَة comes from the Semitic root خ-د-م, which carries the sense of serving and working. It is the verbal noun of the verb خَدَمَ, to serve. The word later spread across the languages of the Islamic world: Persian khedmat, Urdu khidmat, and Turkish hizmet all take it from Arabic. Those are borrowings, not inherited cognates.
