Etymology
Dāʿir is the active-participle form of the Arabic verb daʿara, meaning to be wicked or morally corrupt. The root d-ʿ-r carries a sense of depravity and indecency in Classical Arabic. From the same root comes daʿāra, the abstract noun now used in modern Arabic for debauchery and, in a narrower legal sense, prostitution.
