Mumīt is the active participle of the Form IV verb amāta, meaning to kill or cause to die. Both trace to the Semitic root m-w-t, the same root behind the everyday verb māta, to die. Form IV in Arabic typically makes a verb causative, so amāta literally means to make someone die, and mumīt means the one or thing that causes death. This is a native Semitic derivation, not an Indo-European one.
