Etymology
Arabic إوزة is generally traced to an old borrowing that entered through Aramaic awwāzā, itself apparently from an Iranian source. That places it in the same ancient word family that gave Latin anser, Greek khēn, Sanskrit hamsa, and English goose, a family many scholars think began as an echo of the bird's own honking cry. The base إوز names geese as a group, and the ة ending marks out one single bird, much as ta marbuta turns many Arabic collectives into countable singulars.
