Etymology
فِضِّيّ is built from فِضّة (fiḍḍa), the Arabic word for silver, plus the nisba suffix ـِيّ, which turns a noun into a relational adjective meaning 'of or like X'. Classical lexicographers linked فِضّة itself to the root ف-ض-ض, meaning 'to break apart', on the idea that raw silver was traded and paid out in broken pieces or fragments before standard coinage. The adjective فِضِّيّ therefore literally means 'pertaining to silver' and covers both the material and the color.
