Etymology

Dhayl comes from the Semitic root dh-y-l, which carries the sense of something trailing or dragging behind. The base noun names an animal's tail, and Arabic extended it to anything that trails a main body: a garment's hem, the last spot on a ranked list, or a postscript tacked onto a text. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no Indo-European root or cognates in that family.
