Etymology
ضَمّ comes from the Semitic root ض-م-م, a geminate triliteral root in which the second and third consonants are identical. The root carries the core sense of bringing separate things together into one. Classical Arabic uses this same root for the derived verb انضمّ (to join, become affiliated) and for the name of the short-u vowel mark, ضَمّة, itself a kind of small addition made to a letter. Because Arabic is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
