Etymology

جَنْي is a masdar, a verbal noun, built from the Arabic root ج ن ي on the pattern فَعْل. The root verb جنى means to pick or gather fruit by hand, and by extension to bring in a crop. The same root later gave Arabic the legal sense of committing an offense, since an act too is something a person brings upon themselves.
