Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root r-w-q, which carries the core idea of clarity or limpidness, as of settled water or wine free of sediment. From this physical sense of clearness, Arabic developed the figurative meaning of being pleasing or appealing, since something clear and untroubled is also attractive to the eye or mind. The root also gives the active participle raaqin, meaning elegant or refined, and the noun riwaaq, a portico or hall.
